Boston based Seed Recordings have been putting out a catalogue of fine releases and these mixes of ‘Get Up’ are no exception. I have chosen two mixes to review here, the Club Shelter mix and the Saltfish and Bammy mix. The Shelter mix starts off in a real Mr. Fingers way, with distorted and filtered keys, subtle percussion and THAT analogue keyboard sound. The track bubbles up under it’s own steam, before the superb flute sounding keys take the track to its finale and wraps things up for this mix. The Saltfish and Bammy mix is one of the most innovative and original mixes I’ve heard in th elast five years. Think two tone meets ska and is blended with house. It may sound like a burnt dinner, but it is actually a brilliant mix of the track, and like I say, one of the most original ideas I’ve heard in a long while. This mix is nothing short of genius!

The duo of Dave Lalla & Big Logan (collectively known as Jersey Soul) have been making alot of noise in 2008. And as the year slowly comes to a close, Jersey Soul is in full throttle mode. Here we find the duo teaming up with John Crockett (on keys) and adding their Midas touch to an already slamming original project which was first put out in early 2008. A variety of mixes are offered on this 14th outing for Seed Recordings. The “Shelter Mix” (and instrumental) are my personal faves, and although the dubbed out Reggae-tinged “Saltfish & Bammy mixes” are not my thing, I will admit that they are somewhat original in concept & do stretch the norms of House Music’s predictable linearity. A mix that stands tall is the slamming “Johnny Soul Tek Jazz Mix”, which is more of a dub mix, but with a serious old-school flavor to it, in the same style as veteran House Music producer, MK (aka Mark Kinchen)! Rick has performed regularly at large festivals and intimate jazz clubs throughout the world. He’s been a sought after soloist and horn section arranger whose work can be heard on European star DJ’s Milk and Sugar’s Higher and Higher, Lift Me Up and Jezebel, as well as several Damien J. Carter tracks. His sax and flute have also been featured on remixes by David Morales and most recently, Groove Junkies.

GJs Funky Roots Rub, GJs Politically Correct Mix
Groove Junkies ‘Funky Roots Rub’ mix utilizes a few of the same elements as their ‘Politically Correct’ Mix, but has a distinct tribal feel that incorporates live percussion, vocal chants, and a female vocal bite from the amazing Solara, along with additional keys. Barack would be proud! Their
‘Politically Correct’ Mix sports a wicked electronic bass and drumline snare pattern which provide the hump for Prophet’s spoken word and Keller’s amazing horn sections, sax solos, and flute. Techy synth stabs, and morphed pads round out the atmospheric palate of sounds. Both mixes will do the damage!

Stuttering Munx Remix, Tim’s Stuttering Munx Re-Rub
UK upstarts Stuttering Munx (Tim Nice & Johnny Young,) have delivered 2 stompin’ main room monsters! Both mixes feature killer beats against a tech house groove, with some massive synth action on the side. The guys use most of the original vocals in this simple, yet very effective remix. With music now signed to labels in Tokyo, Seattle, London & L.A. the future looks bright for Britain’s hottest new production team.

Los Angeles native Richard Amaya (aka Outer) has been a Resident DJ for LA’s (and the USA’s) longest running underground mix-show POWER TOOLS on Power 106 for the last 6 years. He is also label manager here at MoreHouse Records! He delivers 2 outstanding remixes oozing with soul. Best described as Afro funk with a jazz sax appeal, his funky soca-ish remixes will definitely get the party started. Beautiful sax workings by Rick Keller reinforce a beating drum that will wake the ancestors up. Outer’s rework will take the celebration beyond 2 terms!

On December 1st, the critically-acclaimed Reel People and UK soul stalwart Omar’s collaborative single ‘Outta Love’ hits the shops, with brand new remixes from Alix Alvarez and IG Culture..

Despite the title and lyrical content, ‘Outta Love’ feels defiantly upbeat, with its dancehall-eque beat, lush strings and rich production. Add Omar’s fresh vocal tone, and ‘Outta Love’ sounds both modern and classic.

Bronx resident Alix Alvarez delivers his stripped back ‘SOLE Channel’ remix which carries the vocals along on punchy beats, with a track that gets deeper and more musical, adding melancholic chords as it progresses. Also present is a remix instrumental, (vocal) dub and dub instrumental. Alvarez made his name engineering for house heroes Masters At Work and has also remixed Amy Winehouse’s ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’.

Broken beat lynchpin and Roots Manuva producer IG Culture takes the track in an abstract direction, maintaining the original’s drum pattern, upping the tempo and adding his trademark bleepy bass. The ‘Bruk For The Love Refit’ builds the tension and dancefloor pressure, eventually opening out into a verse, before rolling out to the end. The ‘InterOutta Dub’ piles on more drums, and does what dubs do.

Also available as part of the digital single package is 4 Hero’s bossa nova remix in full vocal, instrumental and dub incarnations. The former of which was recently released on ‘Seven Ways To Wonder – The Remixes’ and featured top grade versions by the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Karizma, Jon Cutler, and Kyoto Jazz Massive.

Testament to the strength of the sophomore album ‘Seven Ways To Wonder’, ‘Outta Love’ is the forth single from that source, following on from ‘Alibi’, ‘Upside’ and ‘Amazing’.
