FUSION: A NextAid Benefit
Saturday April 12, 2008

Nu-Soul Magazine and NextAid are joining forces to bring you FUSION on Saturday April 12 at Skinny’s Lounge in North Hollywood. This will be a landmark night of future soul and hip-hop featuring LIVE performances from acclaimed Om Records artists Samantha James & Black Spade. All proceeds will go to NextAid to support their mission in assisting children orphaned by AIDS in Africa!

Performances by Om Records newest stars:
SAMANTHA JAMES LIVE
Songwriter/performer Samantha James has spent the past three years honing her estimable skills as a modern-day singer/songwriter within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Basia, Amel Larrieux, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba.

On her debut album ‘Rise’ for San Francisco based indie label Om Records, Samantha teamed up with producer and co-writer Sebastian Arocha Morton-AKA ROCAsound (Sting, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Fila Brazilia and Rick James for the classic finale’ of the hit film Little Miss Sunshine.)

BLACK SPADE

Black Spade’s music is a melting pot of sounds hailing from St. Louis by way of New York, Detroit, LA, and everywhere that hip-hop has carved a distinctive and influential sound for itself. Writing and producing all his music along with MC’ng, Spade’s one man team approach is full of burbling synths, and off-kilter drums while his voice slides smoothly over choruses coated in multi-tracked vocals and skipping roughshod drums.

Spade’s cadence flutters up and down like Pharoahe Monch, but stays introspective like Common. Before you know it, he’ll switch to singing and suddenly his songs become less like hip hop experimentation and more like fully fleshed sketches. At his core, Black Spade is a producer who makes music because he loves to. His sounds are grounded in the past while still sounding futuristic, and most importantly come from the heart.

About Nu-Soul Magazine

Launched in October 2006, Nu-Soul bridges the gap between the world of R&B/soul and the underground vibes of electronica, the common factor being a grounding in funk, soul and urban lifestyle. This is a place where the sounds of neo-soul, drum and bass, deep house and breakbeat are a part of the same family. Through fascinating articles, engaging interviews, and the latest reviews, Nu-Soul hopes to open minds to the incredible array of soul influenced music available today.

Deeper Shades - Gyasi - “The Dance”

The Dance
Deeper Shades Recordings DSOH002 - release date: Apr/18/2008

01 Lars Behrenroth Remix (5:18)  House
02 Lars Behrenroth Remix (jojoflores Edit) (6:39)  House
03 Gyasi’s Tap Remix (6:08)  House

You’ve heard it in Miami, now grab your copy. The Dance - remixed by Lars Behrenroth - re-edit by jojoflores

Deeper Shades Recordings’ second release comes from Gyasi in the form of an ode to the dancers… and the dancers should be pleased!

The hypnotic beats and simple funky synth lines draw the listener into a unique headspace and create a thick atmosphere sure to heat up the floor and get the dancers open. Lars Behrenroth gives the piece enough room to breathe and grow into a slow burning gem.

jojoflores takes the beats even deeper and rearranges the composition into a dancers’ paradise. His edit is more driving and urgent, leaving no one against the wall. This is a absolute floor filler.

Gyasi’s Tap remix rubs in the dub flavor to perfection. Echoed out in true Jamaican dub style, this mix will sit nicely in the sets at the finest dub nights currently blazing across Germany and the rest of Europe.
If you were in Miami for the WMC 2008, chances are you heard this tune in quite a few places. Early support by Marques Wyatt, Mark Grant, Jamie Thinnes, Jimpster, Boddhi Satva, Rafael Moraes, Djinxx, DJ Pope, DJ Minx, Pablo Martinez, Kiko Navarro, Franck Roger and more.
Never being one to follow the crowd, DJ Gyasi has blazed a trail from coast to coast hammering crowds with his deep soulful sounds. Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gyasi has gained the reputation of being the embodiment of deepness. He currently resides in Las Vegas and holds a residency with Red at the Foundation Room.
Deep beats with relentless intensity, The Dance is a fine follow up to Yes Smoke for Lars Behrenroth’s Deeper Shades Recordings. The deep journey continues!
Written, Arranged & Produced by Gyasi

Papa - Reel People featuring Darien “Alibi”

Reel People featuring Darien
Alibi (Dennis Ferrer Remixes)
Papa PAPA045 - release date: Apr/17/2008

01 Dennis F’s Out On Bail Mix (6:41)  House
02 Dennis F’s Out On Bail Instrumental Mix (6:26)  House

Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed second album Seven Ways To Wonder and a set of storming, sold out UK gigs, Reel People are proud to present two brand new mixes by the major house talent that is Dennis Ferrer!!

Having already won support from Pete Tong, ‘DF’s Out On Bail Mix’ takes the warm vocals of New York underground soul luminary Darien and marries them to a deep, techy mix, offering the perfect balance of light and dark. Bouncy, jerky drums sit on top of a wobbly, lurching bassline and wildpitch-style synth stabs. ‘DF’s Out On Bail Instrumental’ takes the track down a murky alleyway, adding pitched-down 303 squelches, a winsome melody played on what sounds like a synthesised melodica, and moody, organ-like stabs.

Reel People Biog

Hailing from London’s East End, Oli Lazarus spent three years of musical osmosis in Flying Records, a shop specialising in soulful dance music. After this grounding education and with very little song writing or studio experience under his belt, he produced Reel People’s debut single ‘Spiritual’. The entirely positive reception to his maiden voyage (plus a little help from production master Phil Asher and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Haines) helped spur him on to realise the lauded debut LP.

Oli and then partner Mike Patto set to it and in 2003 ‘Second Guess’ was released on Oli’s Papa Records label. The album was greatly received and led to the band being signed to Columbia Records in Japan, where they remain hugely popular, even supporting Herbie Hancock at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. In February 2006 the album was re-released on dance independent Defected Records. To enhance the new version, the guys penned the club classic ‘The Rain’ and the uber cool cover of Thelma Houston’s ‘You Used To Hold Me So Tight’. Accompanying this was a bonus disc of live versions which really showed off how the band had developed over the 3 years of touring ‘Second Guess’.

Live, Reel People have stormed auditoriums worldwide including week long stints at the famous Blue Note in Japan and Ronnie Scott’s in London. Other stand- out performances were delivered at The Southport Weekender, V Festival and T In The Park.

Dennis Ferrer Biog

Veteran songwriter/producer Dennis Ferrer began his career in dance music making techno in the early 90’s and in 2003 he co-produced the anthem ‘Sandcastles’. With his signature style melding deep house, techno and afro rhythms, ‘Sandcastles’ became the cornerstone of varied DJ sets, from Jeff Mills to Timmy Regisford to Deep Dish.

Since then, Ferrer has been nominated for three House Music awards, mixed one of the Defected Soul Heaven series with his sometime partner Kerri Chandler and released classic remixes of artists including Blaze, Barbara Tucker, Fish Go Deep and Telepopmusik. He has released tracks on labels including Defected, King Street, Basic, Ibadan, Metaphor and Sfere.

Ferrer’s debut album, ‘The World As I See It’ delivered the goods upon its 2006 release with undeniable club anthems ‘Touched the Sky’, ‘Transitions’, the gospel style ‘Church Lady’ and the powerhouse ‘Son of Raw’. His latest venture, ‘A Black Man in Space’ is a potent shot of minimal techno meets soul from the forthcoming album, ‘The More Things Change’.

At the helm of independent label, Objektivity, Ferrer continues to hit his stride on signature bass-laden productions with the likes of Karizma, Abicah Soul and The Martinez Brothers.
Looking forward to 2008, he continues to take chances on the unpredictable including a current remix project with Scandinavian songstress Ane Brun.
